Affleck, Jennifer Lynn (Jennifer Lynn) J.Lo (born Jennifer Lynne Lopez on July 24, 1969) is an American singer, actress, and dancer who is best known by her stage name. As a Fly Girl dancer, she appeared on the sketch comedy television show In Living Color from 1991 to 1993, when she decided to focus on acting. To earn more than $1 million for her role in Selena (1997), she was the first Hispanic actress to do so. Following the success of her roles in Anaconda (1997) and Out of Sight (1998), she rose to prominence as Hollywood's highest-paid Hispanic actor.

By playing Selena Quintanilla-Pérez in 1997's Selena, Jennifer Lopez made her first $1 million as an actress.
For the first time in her career, she was able to "actually star in a movie" but expressed disappointment that other Latina actors weren't given the same opportunities. With the director of Mi Familia's previous film, Lopez went through an intense audition process and spent time with the late singer's family in Corpus Christi, Texas before filming began. According to Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times in his review of the show, "she has the star presence to look convincing in front of 100,000 fans," he said of the performance. The Los Angeles Times' Kenneth Turan called the performance "incandescent." Many people have thought her performance was deserving of an Academy Award nomination over the years: "Gregory Nava, the director and writer of the film, says that he thought she should have won an Oscar for that role. He was so moved by Lopez's performance that he went to Warner Bros.'s top brass and requested an Academy campaign for the film. In their opinion, the Academy will never nominate her because she deserves it, he recalls them saying. A Latina will never be nominated by this group." Later that year, in 1997, Lopez appeared in the horror film Anaconda with Ice Cube. "A little credit" for being the first film of its kind to star a Latina and an African-American was given to Anaconda by Variety's Joe Leydon, who called the film "silly." Oliver Stone inserted a sex scene featuring Lopez while filming the crime drama U Turn (1997)]. Lopez said it wasn't something in 2003 ""It's hard being the only woman on a set... I fought with Stone about it," she said. However, in the film, it actually worked... Grace was so close to being a flesh-and-blood limb by this point. Her body wasn't hers at all."
